Overview
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, transforming the city of Edinburgh into a creative playground every August. Founded in 1947 as an alternative to the official Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe has since grown into a cultural powerhouse that welcomes artists and audiences from across the globe.
Its open-access model means anyone with a venue and a vision can take part - resulting in a staggering array of performances across theatre, comedy, dance, music, circus, spoken word, and more. With shows taking place in theatres, pubs, bookshops, streets, basements, and everything in between, the Fringe delivers an experience like no other.
The event is supported by the Fringe Society, a registered charity that champions inclusivity, freedom of expression, and support for new and established talent alike.

Street Events
The Fringe’s street events transform Edinburgh into a festival within a festival. Expect over 500 buskers, living statues, circus acts, and spontaneous performances throughout the Royal Mile and other key locations. These events are family-friendly, interactive, and free to enjoy — though donations are welcomed.
